Expressing Love
by Connee Chandler

People are dying for real human interaction, for genuine friendship, for someone to tell them they are all right.  --The Science of Mind, September 2003, page 233

Relationship article: Children learn what they live. The model our parents set for us will likely be repeated throughout our lives, unless we consciously change our patterns. My life is particularly blessed because my husband David’s parents showed him how to express love in words. David showed me a cherished birthday card he received from them. Inside were two love letters. His Mom shared how precious he was to her, while his Dad declared how proud he felt to be his father, listing many accomplishments he’d observed during the 11th year of David’s life. I consider myself a student of David’s skills in both expressing and receiving love, learned from his folks.

Kent Nerburn said in Small Graces, “Who among us does not grow and prosper when someone shines even the smallest bit of sunlight upon us?” It takes so little effort to acknowledge another, yet it can make a big difference. To be appreciators, we must open our hearts twice, first in noticing how loveable other people are and then, again, in mentioning it.

To know love well enough to clearly express and accept it openly is divine. We can learn this skill as easily from our peers as from our parents, and then pass the gift along. Would you like others to look to you as a model of how to express love clearly?

Here is an affirmation on expressing more love. Today I am blessed to give and receive much love in my life. I am graceful in expressing my appreciation openly to others.
