Calcite is a common, soft mineral which comes in a rainbow of colors. It may be completely transparent in its crystalline state, or opaque as in limestone and marble. The crystalline variety may come in very large crystals. Metamorphosed (heated) calcite is known as marble and is often used to adorn buildings. Uncompacted calcite is known as chalk. Calcite is the main mineral composing limestone and the stalagmites and stalagtites in caves. Calcite will fizz when wetted with a mild acid solution. This is a bi-refringent gemstone - meaning anything viewed through a clear crystal will appeared doubled.

Because of its bi-refringent (double refraction) properties, Calcite is thought to double the intention of its wearer, serving as a psychic amplifier. Because of this amplifying ability, many religious structures have been composed of marble and limestone which are believed to mystically increase the power of prayer. This also aids in seeing both sides of every issue.

Calcite, also known as Iceland Spar, was used by the Norse as a sun stone and as a divinatory tool to help navigate a course for ships at sea.

It is used as a healing stone by traditional Pennsylvania Dutch healers, who call it the "divinity stone."

Calcite has the ability to concentrate energy and release it in intensified form. This makes it an excellent stone for use in debilitating conditions; the placement of the stone being relative to the chakra involved, using its corresponding color as a guide. For example, blue calcite is used with the throat chakra and green with the heart.

Calcite is useful in assisting the cleansing organs (kidneys, pancreas, and spleen), bones and joints.

Calcite in general is considered good for balancing male/female energies and emotion. Calcite alleviates fears and anxieties and grounds excess energy.
